WORKSHOP OUTLINE:
Half day workshop will explore Roadway Development at Longwall mines in Queensland and NSW.
The case studies feature discussion on continuous miner activities, road and water management, panel advance and pillar cycle management, referencing Lean measures such as:
- Standardised work design, implementation and auditing;
- Heijunka planning methods for level scheduling of work;
- Operator and supervisor involvement in the re-design of work systems and procedures; and
- The development of 'worker problem solvers' for sustainable results.
Delegates will engage in an open and interactive session that offers explanation, insights and debate on these 'Lean' methods and the challenges and opportunities they offer.

Greg is Managing Director of Farthing West Pty Limited, Specialists in Lean Six Sigma Consulting. Greg is a skilled practitioner of value stream optimisation and has mentored staff and led "Lean Thinking" problem solving teams in many of Australia's largest organisations. He is the founder of Farthing West and has over the past 15 years assisted client organisations substantially improve profi t and lower costs. Greg's mining experiences span operations and management areas in addition to consulting services. This includes: continuous and long-wall mining operations; feasibility studies and simulations; development of alternative strategies for the mining, preparation and transport of underground and open cut coal; long wall materials handling studies; reviews of overall mine design; equipment selection and performance; operating costs; manning and infrastructure, workforce rostering; and design and development of belt management programs to assist with performance, safety and conformance management.
